How to Use the Take Home Pay Calculator Australia

  1. Enter your salary and choose how it's paid: annually, monthly, fortnightly or weekly.
  2. Tick "My salary includes super" if your pay is a package that includes super, and tick the HECS-HELP box if you have a study loan.
  3. Select Calculate to see your take-home pay, broken down by income tax, Medicare levy and HELP repayments.

How Take-Home Pay Is Calculated in Australia

Your take-home pay (also called net pay) is the money that actually lands in your bank account. Starting from your gross salary, this calculator subtracts three things: income tax, the Medicare levy and, if you have a student loan, your HECS-HELP repayment. Your employer's super is paid on top of your salary into your super fund, so it doesn't reduce your take-home pay.

2026–27 Australian Income Tax Brackets

Australia has a progressive tax system: each rate applies only to the part of your income that falls inside that bracket, not to your whole salary. From 1 July 2026, the rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 dropped from 16% to 15%. These are the rates for Australian residents:

Taxable incomeTax rate
$0 – $18,200Nil
$18,201 – $45,00015%
$45,001 – $135,00030%
$135,001 – $190,00037%
$190,001 and over45%

If you earn less than about $66,667, the low income tax offset (worth up to $700) also reduces your tax. The calculator applies this automatically. See the full tax breakdown with our Income Tax Calculator Australia. Source: ATO — tax rates for Australian residents.

Medicare Levy

Most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of their taxable income, which helps fund the public health system. If you are single and earn $28,011 or less, you pay no levy, and just above that amount it is phased in gradually. Source: ATO — Medicare levy.

HECS-HELP Repayments

If you have a HECS-HELP or other study loan, compulsory repayments begin once your income passes $69,528. You repay 15 cents for each dollar above that threshold, rising to 17 cents per dollar above $129,717. Repayments never exceed 10% of your total income. Super Guarantee

Your employer must pay at least 12% of your ordinary earnings into your super fund. On a $100,000 salary that is $12,000 a year, paid on top of your pay. Check how much super you're accruing with our Super Calculator Australia. Source: ATO — super for employers.

For example, on a $100,000 salary, income tax is $20,520 and the Medicare levy is $2,000. That leaves take-home pay of $77,480 a year, or about $1,490 a week.

Converting Between Pay Periods

Job ads, payslips and contracts don't always quote pay the same way, so it helps to know how the periods relate. A year has 52 weeks and 26 fortnights, but only 12 months — so multiplying a monthly figure by 12 gives your annual salary, while multiplying a fortnightly figure by 26 does the same. Weekly and fortnightly amounts scale simply (fortnightly is roughly double weekly), but monthly doesn't divide evenly into weeks, which is why a "per week" figure calculated from a monthly salary will look slightly different from one calculated directly from a weekly rate. This calculator does the conversion for you in either direction — enter your pay in whichever period you know it, and it works out the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is take-home pay on a $100,000 salary in Australia?

On a $100,000 salary in 2026–27, you pay about $20,520 in income tax and $2,000 in Medicare levy, leaving take-home pay of about $77,480 a year. That is roughly $2,980 a fortnight or $1,490 a week, before any HECS-HELP repayments.

Is super taken out of my take-home pay?

No. Your employer pays super of at least 12% on top of your salary, straight into your super fund. The only exception is if your job was offered as a total package "including super" — in that case, tick "My salary includes super" and the calculator will split the super out first.

Why is my payslip slightly different from this calculator?

Employers withhold tax from each pay using ATO withholding tables, which round amounts and spread tax evenly across the year. This calculator works out your actual yearly tax, so small differences are normal. Any difference is usually settled when you lodge your tax return.

When do I start repaying my HECS-HELP debt?

Compulsory repayments start once your repayment income is above $69,528 in 2026–27. You repay 15 cents for each dollar above that amount, which is withheld from your pay if you have told your employer about your debt.

Does this calculator include the Medicare levy surcharge?

No. The Medicare levy surcharge is an extra 1% to 1.5% charged to higher earners who do not have private hospital cover. If that applies to you, your take-home pay will be lower than shown here.

Can I use this calculator if I'm not an Australian resident for tax purposes?

This calculator uses resident tax rates, including the tax-free threshold. Foreign residents and working holiday makers pay tax at different rates and do not pay the Medicare levy, so the results will not be accurate for them.
